Job Description

The Merchandising Category Specialist, in partnership with the Category Manager, is responsible for delivering the financial performance of their specific departments and product categories. The Merchandising Category Specialist role is designed to establish an understanding of the Category Management concepts and standardized processes to better prepare the associate for a more advanced future role in Category Management.

· Entry level position designed to develop a strong understanding of category management concepts, processes and procedures through mentoring with Merchandising leadership

· Assist with all aspects of the product life cycle in selected product categories including item set-up, order tracking, customer service/product issues, vendor follow-ups, etc.   

· Assist with New Product Development process for all items accepted into the business within assigned categories

· Develop merchandising concepts, product and promotional plans that strategically drive category growth while continually evaluating product mix to ensure customer satisfaction, increase market penetration and competitive advantage

· Determine standard and promotional product pricing through competitive analysis, industry research, store visits and product pricing strategies to support management of major product categories  

· Evaluate industry and competitive trends; define and recommend new opportunities

· Assist in the negotiations with vendors to assure we secure the lowest price and most favorable terms utilizing incentives like but not limited to payment terms, rebates, co-op, allowance, returns and freight discounts

· Work collaboratively with buyers, merchandisers, marketing, creative team and distribution team to assure the supply chain is managed efficiently and product is accurately represented in all channels and effectively distributed

· Develop as an industry and customer expert to assure we stay ahead of our competition and present our customers with the best assortment of products in the marketplace

· Miscellaneous additional duties as assigned

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
Proficient with MS Office, Excel, Power Point
Strong written and verbal communication, negotiating and vendor management skills
Strong organizational, planning, problem-solving, and analytical skills
Ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities
Woodworking experience/background or interest preferred
